A site in rapid development

The construction of the plastic recycling centre started in August last year. In April of this year, the first machines were already installed in the new buildings. The plant itself will process 11,000 tons of plastic containers and 30,000 tons of PET bottles into plastic granules. In turn, those pellets are then used to manufacture new plastic products.

A global overview of the works edibosud took on in this project, which align perfectly with our durability mission:

  • A brand-new 13,000 m²-building, fully geared towards plastics recycling
  • Offices according to the turnkey principle, housed underneath two awning constructions
  • A water purification installation with the capacity to process waste water of a city of 20,000 people

The most important challenges along the way

“Installing the full metal structure and the enormous span structure of the trusses proved to be the most challenging aspect of the project. Consider that the main building, measuring 100 by 60 metres, only has four central columns. Not only do these columns support the primary and secondary trusses, they also bear the weight of two travelling cranes weighing 15 tons each.”

“Due to the size of the trusses – with lengths varying between 20 and 30 metres – they were transported to the construction site in different, smaller sections. Normally, these trusses are welded together in the workshop but in this case, we needed to assemble them on site. This evidently posed several additional challenges – take into account that our stability engineers factored in a total of over 800 tons of steel for this construction site!”

“Another additional challenge was responding to the client’s added requests during the works – this called for a strong example of flexibility by our challengers. Furthermore, we also handled the calculations and installations of the sanitary facilities, ventilation systems, and electricity in both the offices and the production halls. The installation of 4,000 solar panels (generating up to 2 megawatts) in the third quarter of 2025 is also headed our way. Later, those will compensate for part of the energy needs of the recycling installations.”

A project that exudes sustainability

“Moreover, this building aligns perfectly with our own sustainability vision. Besides the solar panels and the water purification installation that will recycle both rainwater and process water, we are insulating the roof, the façades and the offices with rockwool. For the roof sealing, we have chosen TPO material, which is a more durable alternative to the traditional materials often used for flat roofs.”

“Rainwater recovery also plays an important role. A negative pressure system leads the rainwater from two buildings to a 3,000 m² reservoir, ready to be reused.”

Strong in unison: the power of edibosud

At edibosud, we are always fully committed to collaborating closely with our clients – a strength that has proven to be key in this project.

“We are not only in charge of the construction of an industrial hall here. We’re also delivering two fully furbished office areas, including sanitary facilities, ventilation system and electrical wiring. We additionally need to pay close attention to the acoustic finish, given the number of decibels produced by the machinery.”

Apart from performing the works, edibosud is also taking on the coordination between the contracting parties.

“We ensure all our subcontractors’ works are aligned, such as the electrical engineers, sanitary specialists and bricklayers. Directing that interaction, combined with our strong adaptability to the client’s wishes, is our biggest strength in this entire project. For instance, we provided additional structures and façade openings for the technical staff working directly for the building consultant, to guarantee an efficient and smooth continuation of the works.”

Thanks to this close collaboration, edibosud was instantly awarded a substantial follow-up assignment: the construction of a water purification installation next to the recycling plant. This is where all the processed water from the recycling process will be treated. The next couple of months promise to be challenging and fascinating once again!
